Turmoil at OpenAI: after firing Sam Altman, what’s next for the home of ChatGPT?

On November 17, OpenAI’s board of directors abruptly announced the departure of co-founder and CEO Sam Altman, effective immediately. Without saying it directly, the council revealed that Altman had been fired after a review, “he concluded that he had not always been candid in his communications with the board, which hindered his ability to carry out his responsibilities.”

It is unclear what caused the board to lose confidence in its ability to lead OpenAI. In the preceding days, everyone had continued to act as if everything was normal, with OpenAI insiders and partners like Microsoft surprised to learn of Altman’s ouster just moments before it was announced.

Within hours, its co-founder and former president Greg Brockman announced that “based on today’s news, I have resigned.” OpenAI’s chief technology officer, Mira Murati, has been named interim CEO for the time being.
